Internship Program

The professional practice program allows students to receive on-the-job experience. The program is targeted to undergraduate and graduate students.

The Department of State can manage the internship program for undergraduate and graduate students in association with other institutions. In a similar way, it can establish rules to administer the program internally or through collaborative agreements.

Diplomacy and Foreign Relations Internship Program - Arturo Morales Carrión

The Dr. Arturo Morales Carrión Foreign Affairs Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students, from universities in Puerto Rico, the opportunity to collaborate, during an academic semester, in multilateral institutions and international organizationsin Washington D.C. and in international Embassies.

Through the internship program, students will gain professional experience in the international relations field. The purpose of the program is to build communication channels between Puerto Rico and other countries as well as promoting international relations in our political and economic times. The Dr. Arturo Morales Carrión Internship Program will provide:

  • Formation in leadership matters and professional experience
  • Exposure to international government, private sector, organizational and non-profit leaders
  • Individual mentorship
  • Housing (shared with other interns) in the USand international

Purpose:

The program aims to offer a professional experience for undergraduate and graduate students and is intended to provide knowledge in international matters. Likewise, the program aims to develop professionals that will contribute to the socioeconomic development and foreign affairs of Puerto Rico.  

The Program assigns undergraduate students, for one (1) semester in international institutions such as the Organization of American States, the International Monetary Fund, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, among others. Students also can work in embassies that have collaborative agreements with Puerto Rico and federal government agencies that manage international affairs.  

The program offers students the opportunity of earning educational credits for participation following the university’s institutional rules.

Requirements:

  • The program candidates will be undergraduate and graduate students
  • They should be enrolled in a duly accredited educationalinstitution in Puerto Rico
  • Their field of study should be external relations, international (or foreign) affairs or demonstrate interest in diplomacy or external relations
  • At the time of participation, the student must have approved, at least, half of the credits, leading to his or her degree
  • The chosen interns will receive a monthly stipend
  • They will receive housing and transportation from Puerto Rico to the internship destination
  • This internship will have a length equivalentto an academic semester, with a maximum duration of five (5) months

When?

The Diplomacy and Foreign Relations Internship Program is carried out during the semesters from January to June and August to December of each year.

Collaborative Agreement

The Internship Program in Diplomacy and External Relationships will be coordinated by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars during the January to June or August to December semester annually.  The internship is accomplished in alliance with the Córdova and Fernós Congressional Internship.

Baltasar Corrada del Río Internship Program


The Administrative Order 2018-001 creates the Baltazar Corrada de Río Internship Program. The Department of State will provide students of Puerto Rico with a unique work experience that prepares and inspires the current and future leaders.

This administration recognizes and embraces as institutional policy that internships lay out a distinctive opportunity for personal, professional, and academic growth. It is the outstanding and most qualified students the ones who have the lead in our current job market, one that gets more competitive each day. By providing academic and professional tools to our students, we are contributing to the socioeconomic development of Puerto Rico.

Purpose:

The Department of State seeks to provide a practical experience to college students in different areas of expertise within the framework of functions that are caried out in the Department of State (Trademark and Commercial Names Registration, Corporations, Intellectual Property, Foreign Affairs, IT, Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, among others). The Baltasar Corrada del Río Internship will take place in the facilities of the Department, as well as in consulates and entities that manage external affairs in Puerto Rico.

Requirements:

  • Must be between the ages of 18 to 29
  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student (Associate's, Bachelor's, Master’s, or Doctorate Degree), of a duly accredited university in Puerto Rico or the United States.
  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.00
  • The study field should be directed to areas of work in the Department of State, such as: Law (Trademark and Commercial Names, Corporation, Intellectual Properties), External Relations, IT, Finances, Accounting, Human Resources, among others.
  • The person cannot be an employee of a public agency of the Government of Puerto Rico.
  • They must complete the application for the internship and submit all the documents required in the announcement.
